Getting Started with Linux:

Setting-up the workstation and getting into real
work
Why do I ever want to use Unix/ Linux in my work
? Wht not other OS ?Unix
has been there for the past 30 years or so and
has been extensively used in industry and
academia.
Examples: Unix/ Linux are in use in broad areas
like, high-performace scientific computing (say,
orbiting a sattelite or launching a missile,
comparing an unknown piece of DNA for
similarities against known ones available in
databases), banking, handling huge networks with
high security, maintaining Internet / E-servers
and so on.
Should I learn all Linux
commands ?
No! but one needs to know some
minimal set of Linux/ Unix commands plus some
understanding of the way a Unix system
functions. Linux is highly rich in commands and
possibilities. Every distribution of Linux
comoes with a powerful set of biut-in prorgrams:
from networking to wordprocessing, typesetting,
electronic mail, web servers, are already parts
of Linux/ Unix. Many programs can be downloaded
free. To learn all Unix/ Linux commands and then
to start work seems impractical. So it is quite
possible to learn a small subset of Unix
commands and get on-to work in which course one
shall be able to learn more commands as per the
requirement that may arise.
